I've always been a staunch proponent of fanservice in the right moments. I've always held the belief most shonen have fanservice in their stories to get attention using T&A and either tone it down when they have people hooked on the story, or (like in fairy tails case) go all in and double the fanservice to.divisive results.īut as the viewership diversifies to more than just guys who'd enjoy the female lead getting a pantyshot, to a whole new demographic that doesn't like or even hate fanservice and just want the story and action.does it really need to be there? The question is, do SHONEN titles need it? Let me be clear this isnt a war on fanservice, there will always be a market for it in full on eechi comedies. So now I'm wondering.does shonen NEED fanservice in their stories? I've already had a lot of acquaintances (particularly female acquaintances) begin dropping Fire Force, saying that they liked the story but the constant fanservice (particularly disliking Tamaki simply being a walking fanservice gag over a character) turned them off bad from it, and other fans giving them hell for critisizing the fanservice turned them off from it even more. I enjoyed it when I was of that age, and as I grew older just developed a " shrug it's just part of the genre." And didnt let it bother me.īut with a lot of the new crop of anime fans, it does bother them.a lot. Of all the sore spots with the Western Anime community these days as we get more "mainstream" the debate of fanservice, specifically fanservice in shonen/action anime is one of the sorest of sore spots. Tl:dr: as the western anime community grows and the discussion about fanservice in shonen titles (in relation to current criticism of Fire Forces' excessive Fanservice) becomes more divisive, does Shonen NEED fanservice in their stories?
